Organization
The International Brotherhood
of Electrical Workers was chartered in 1891. Local Union
343 was chartered April 1, 1979.
Nature of Trade
Heating, lighting, power,
air conditioning, and refrigeration components all operate
through electrical systems that are
assembled, installed and wired by construction electricians.
These workers also install electrical machinery, electronic
equipment controls, and residential wiring. Technicians
and installers install voice/data fiber optics and alarm systems.
Apprenticeship Training
The apprenticeship
program provides for a varied work experience and education
to make a skilled-competent craftsman. The
apprenticeship training program is an 8000 hour on-the-job
program. 2000 hours of credit is given towards the 8000
hours for completion of a construction electrician course at
an
accredited school, or previous work experience may be credited
towards the 8000 hours. Classroom training consists of
205 hours per year of night school, which is currently 2 nights
a week during the school year.
Qualifications
An applicant must meet the
following requirements in order to apply for the apprenticeship
program:
- Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of selection
and indenture.
- High school diploma or GED, or have a
two-year Associate Degree or higher.
- Physically fit to
perform work of the trade.
- Must attain a qualifying score
on the electrical trade's aptitude test. Test to be scheduled
after application,
application fee
and school transcripts or GED records are submitted.
- Must have completed with a passing grade one full year
of high school algebra or one post high school
algebra
course.
Application, Selection and Hiring Process
Applications
are taken year round. Applicants must apply in person to
S. C. MN Electrical JATC, 5100 Gamble Drive, Suite
365, Minneapolis MN (800-229-6323), Local 343 IBEW LeSueur
MN (800-252-5816), or 405 ½ S. Broadway, Rochester,
MN (507-529-7721). Applicants are selected by interview process with Joint Apprenticeship
and Training Committee.
All applicants are rated and scored. The apprenticeship office
is responsible for all OJT work assignments. Applicants are
offered employment based upon their position on the rating
list.
