Organization
IBEW Local #343 is affiliated with the International Brotherhood
of Electrical Workers. The objectives of the IBEW are to:
- Organize the workers to promote reasonable methods,
- Cultivate the feelings of friendship among those in the industry,
- Provide the means to settle disputes between employee and employer,
- Secure employment for members and to improve the quality of
the workplace; with respect to wages, job security, and standard
of living,
- Elevate the moral, intellectual and social conditions of members
in the interest of a higher standard of citizenship.
Nature of Trade
Construction Electricians layout, assemble, install and test electrical
fixtures, apparatus, and wiring used in electrical systems on construction
projects. These systems are used to provide power for heat, light
and air conditioning and refrigeration. Construction Electricians
also install and connect electrical machinery, electronic equipment
controls, signals and communications systems.
Construction Electricians follow blue prints and specifications
for most installations. For safety, Electricians follow National
Electrical Code Specifications and procedures and, in addition,
must comply with requirements of state, county and municipal electrical
codes.
Technicians and installers install voice data, fiber optics, alarm
systems, microwave, as well as low voltage alarm and sound systems.
Formal Training
To become a Journeyman Electrician, a person receives diversified
training in all areas of the electrical fields. Apprentices train
in a 5-year program which includes 1,000 hours of classroom instruction
on the most up to date technology in the electrical field. Technicians
and installers receive classroom training in all fields of low voltage
installation.
