Organization
The Sheet Metal Workers International
Association was formed by January 10, 1888.
Nature of Trade
Sheet Metal workers fabricate
and install ducts that are used in heating, ventilation and
air conditioning. Thay also fabricate
and install a wide variety of other products made from
light or thin galvanized metals, such as siding, metal decks,
paint
oven and spray booths, gutters, flashing and dust collecting
systems.
Apprenticeship Training
Sheet Metal apprentices
receive 8,000 hours of on-the-job training during their 4
year apprenticeship program. They also receive
900 hours of related classroom instruction by qualified
instructors who are also sheet metal journeymen employed in
the sheet
metal trade.
Qualifications
An applicant must meet the
following requirements in order to apply for the apprenticeship
program:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- High
school diploma or GED
- Good physical condition
- Above average mechanical and
numerical ability
Application, Selection and Hiring Process
Applicants
should send a self-addressed, stamped #10 envelope to the
above address. Applicants will be tested, screened
and ranked. Placement occurs from the union hiring hall
on a year round basis. |
